A keyboard that skips keys or a touchpad that stops moving the cursor can make a laptop almost unusable. The cause might be a simple setting or driver issue, or it might be a hardware fault. The trick is to separate the two quickly, as shown below.

First, find out if it is software or hardware

Restart the laptop and press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI, then test the keyboard or touchpad there. This environment runs before Windows. If the keyboard or touchpad works there but not inside Windows, the problem is software or a driver. If it fails in both places, hardware is likely at fault.

Fixes for a keyboard that is not typing

  1. Restart the laptop and install pending Windows updates.
  2. Check that Filter Keys and Sticky Keys are not turned on in Windows accessibility settings.
  3. Check that the Fn Lock key has not changed the behaviour of your top row of keys.
  4. In Device Manager, uninstall the keyboard device and restart so that Windows reinstalls it.
  5. Plug in a USB keyboard. If it works, the problem is limited to the built-in keyboard.
  6. Look for debris under the keys and clean gently with a soft brush. Do not pour liquid on it.

Fixes for a touchpad that is not responding

  1. Many HP laptops let you turn the touchpad off and on by double-tapping its top-left corner. Try it, or use the touchpad key on your function row.
  2. Open Settings, then Bluetooth and devices, then Touchpad and make sure it is switched on.
  3. Disconnect any external mouse, as some settings disable the touchpad when one is attached.
  4. Update or reinstall the touchpad driver from HP's official support site, then restart.
  5. Clean the surface with a slightly damp soft cloth and check that it is not scratched or lifted.

Signs of hardware damage

If you notice the base of your laptop rising or the touchpad lifting, stop using it and have the battery checked right away.

  • Whole rows or blocks of keys stop working at the same time, which points to a keyboard cable or membrane fault
  • Keys or the touchpad work only when you press down on the palm rest
  • The touchpad button feels stuck or the surface is bulging or lifted, which can be caused by a swelling battery underneath
  • Sticky or non-responsive keys after a drink was spilled

After a liquid spill

Switch off the laptop immediately, unplug it, turn it so that the liquid runs out and do not use a hair dryer. Bring it to a technician quickly. Sugary drinks such as tea, coffee and cold drinks can corrode contacts within days, and an early cleaning can prevent a much bigger repair.

Repair options

  • Replacing the full keyboard assembly, including backlit or region-specific layouts where available
  • Replacing or reconnecting the touchpad and its ribbon cable
  • Cleaning corroded areas after a spill and checking nearby components
  • Driver and BIOS updates where the issue is software-based

Frequently asked questions

Can a single key be repaired or do I have to change the whole keyboard?

A loose keycap can sometimes be refitted. If the key's mechanism or the keyboard membrane is damaged, replacing the keyboard is usually the reliable fix.

Why is my touchpad click not working?

It can be a driver or setting problem, but a swollen battery or loosened touchpad assembly can also stop the click from working. Test in the HP diagnostics menu, and check the battery if the base looks lifted.
